Our Dearest Mousewait Family,
I would like to give you an update on Princess Daisy Rachel Young. First and foremost I sincerely apologize for not giving frequent updates, but this whole situation has been a nonstop rollercoaster of emotions and changes which in turn has made it extremely difficult to live a normal life, let alone report to not only our Mousewait family, but our own family and friends as well and for that I apologize. Most of my time is spent filling out forms, making numerous phone calls, following up on phone calls, waiting for phone calls, banging on doors to get an answer and or a reply and mostly being jerked around as the answers and replies seem to change on a daily or weekly basis. That being said, I would like to share with you what is going on with Rachel.
Those of you who may or may not know about a month ago she was staying at rehabilitation center called Health South here in Albuquerque. She was scheduled to return home (though still very injured) on May 15th as that was when her Medicaid would kick in, however someone dropped the ball over there and when the paper work was finalized, it issued her only “Institutional” Medicaid which means that she is only covered as long as she is in some sort of medical facility, so if she went home she would lose all medical coverage, what we applied for was “Community” Medicaid which means that she would be covered outside of a medical facility. We were told by the Health South case worker that the only way to remedy this would be for her to do a 30 day stint in a skilled nursing facility in which during that time the mistake would be rectified and she could come home on June 16th with full medical coverage as her community Medicaid would kick in.
A week before she was set to be discharged we started to order her equipment she we would need to return home as per instructed by the case worker (wheelchair, toilet bars, shower bars, ramps, meds, ect.). it was at this time that they informed us that we were misinformed by the caseworker at health south and that she yet again dropped the ball and forgot a to implement a very important step in the discharge process. Because of this, the 30 day stint was not to remedy the institutional-community Medicare problem, but in fact only puts her at the top of the WAITING LIST for community Medicaid. So now she has to wait 60-90 more days for her community Medicaid to kick in. At this time she may leave the facility, however she will have no coverage for 60 to 90 days while this process is pending.
As desperately as we want her home, this is simply something we cannot afford to do, as she needs meds and outpatient therapy especially a certain machine that electrically stimulates her nerves to keep her legs from COMPLELETLY atrophying. To add insult to injury, during this 60-90 day process she is NOT allowed to leave the facility (we are fighting this as well as dozens of other things). Everyone there is allowed “day passes” where they are allowed to leave the facility for hours at a time, but because her coverage is pending, Medicaid does not want to allow her to leave as it will compromise or hinder the process. Basically they see it as if she is well enough to leave for a couple of hours then they feel she does not need coverage (but yet she is allowed to go home and wait for the coverage?) This makes no sense.
So this is where we are with that whole process. She is still not home and will not be home till the earliest August 18th to September 18th but at this point who knows because every time we get a date we it changes. I wish they would comprehend the psychological toll this is taking on Rachel getting her hopes up and down and having to be cooped up all day in an environment of ill, and angry elderly people.
As for Rachel, she is making the most of it. Through all this Rachel has maintained a positive and cheerful attitude because that is who she is! Though she is injured herself she is brining what joy she can to the residents there. She plays bingo with them she helps do their nails for them, she plays games with them and just visits with those who are lonely and don’t get many visitors, anything she can do to lighten their lives a little. Everyone there just loves her! (CAN YOU BLAME THEM? DUHH!?). She has become quite close with some of the residents; sadly one of the women there that she became very close with had lung cancer and passed away yesterday while Rachel was holding her hand. Her name was Sherri Jaramillo, and Rachel spent very last moment with her while she was passing. I like to think that Rachel kept her with us longer.
As for Rachel’s progress it is there have been some highs and lows. The great news is that her left leg is getting stronger! Though she is not able to use either, she has made huge leaps forward as she can lift it a little bit and uses it to stand for a moment when she transfers out of her wheelchair!!! The bad news is that the right leg is not making any progress and on top of that it is causing a valve in her hear to slow down and not work properly which is causing erratic blood pressure and could be detrimental, but the doctors think that with exercise and proper diet it will heal (no Tigger tails for a while I guess!).
In closing things are slowing down. It is possible that we may have an answer to the day passes this week as well as her custom wheelchair may arrive and she will be more comfortable and not have to continue to use the bulky 60 pound model she has now. From our family to all of yours thank you for your continuous prayers, thoughts CARDS and GIFTS words cannot express how much it means to us when she receives them!!! You are all so generous and words cannot express how grateful and moved we are by all of you. I want you to know that you all are one of (if not the biggest, after Prayer and our Lord and savior) contributing factor to the mental health and stability of Rachel! You all make her feel extremely loved and cared for and fill her life with so much hope and happiness which in turn, helps her to heal physically! Thank you all, God Bless you all and know how much we love you!!! Please continue to pray that the Medicaid process goes quickly, and that she continues to heal mentally and physically, that her legs work again so she may walk, so she may run, so she can stay all day in the sun, wandering free, just like she used to be, a part of our world, and that this Disney princess may be rescued and live happily ever after!!!! AMEN
