Wrist bands establish the order of the first people in line. After you get it you can leave the line and go get food or whatever and as long as you are back before 6am you get the same spot as if you never left. That's according to the Disneyland blog :-) - Sam241

My wife just went over and got in the line to wait in line for the wristbands, which will save your place in the line which will get you into the park, so you can get in the line to get on Radiator Spring Racers.
Hmmmm.....I'm confused now.
Can I just buy someone's wristbands in the morning? You must be close to the front for the offer to apply. Heh. - wg4ever
