What's the longest your child has missed school in order to take a Disneyland vacation?
My kids miss all of the time for DL. 😂😂😂😂 I don't care. When they grow up I want them to remember the magical memories they had as kids as well as reading, writing and math. - Mrsblue

Thank you! This makes me feel better, cause I've always told my husband that family time and memories are more important than anything! He agrees 😉 - lynniesue42 229.4 #1254 11:54PM
Plus we always justify the cost of disney trips by saying these memories will be something she cherished for a lifetime as passes onto we family! - lynniesue42 229.4 #1254 11:55PM

Mads is in the first grade, last year I took her to DL for a week in October. I talked to the teacher about it beforehand and got her homework to do, but honestly it seemed that missing one week wasn't a good idea for her, probably won't do it again! - madsdad

Thanks for your honest review...I wish it was closer to the school year so I could talk to her teacher before putting all this money out to potentially have it do more harm then good! - lynniesue42 229.4 #1254 11:50PM
Yah I will probably do it for a day or so at a time, since I want to go again in October. I don't think there is anything wrong with it, just for us a week was too long for her! - madsdad 1130.7 #72 12:00AM
Don't feel bad! My son has missed two times of five days of school to do Disneyworld vacations. I was proud to say that was my reason for him missing school. Family quality time is always good! Ask the school to give you a homework packet to do. My son was in the 2nd grade and later 5th grade. He is now in college and never forgets our Disney trips! Family relationships should always be a priority and your child will gain more by spending quality time with you than anything school may teach. (I am a college graduate) So many kids now don't have strong relationships with their parents...don't miss this opportunity. Have a wonderful trip. - verofern

I took my daughter out for a week several times during her early years. Try to make it a fun yet educational experience. Work with her teacher to get some ideas. Also, take her to some of the MW meetups so she can socialize with other kids. Socialization is a really important part of the kindergarten years. - Gia

Thank you!!! :) that is very true, a meet-up is a great idea! Plus doesn't kindergarten also foster imagination and creativity, what better place to do that!!! :) - lynniesue42 229.4 #1254 11:57PM

This is a hard one to answer. As a high school teacher I see students miss school for various reasons. While I do agree that there are many important memories to be made outside of school (extra-curriculars, once in a lifetime trips, family stuff, etc) it also depends on the student. I have had many students miss for a week and it has been very difficult for them to get caught up, even with having assignments ahead of time. I think it really depends on the type of student and if they can handle being gone and still learn the material that is expected. Missing one or two days is not usually detrimental (same as being sick). Extended absences can be a problem depending on the student. - LilSterner

As a teacher what are your thoughts on a child that not only makes up the missed homework, but also does an extra credit assignment? - Lelundrial 341.7 #429 11:35AM
That's awesome! I think it's more difficult the older they get. Sometimes students need the teacher's explanation to understand the material. I'm all for family experiences and making memories (probably more than some of my colleagues)- I just think there needs to be balance. Plus if yogurt assignments before, it really irks a teacher if they're not done at the agreed upon time. Teachers take time to get everything in order for extended absences and then to not have it done can be frustrating. - LilSterner 2656.0 #19 11:55AM
Ok I just wanted an expert opinion. The last two times I had to pull my boy out of school. Once for DL another for a funeral, he did extra credit work as well as made up all the missed work both times. If I saw he is going to do the work, he is going to do the work. Plane and train rides aren't that interesting. - Lelundrial 341.7 #429 11:57AM
I only ask because I'm feeling guilty...I booked our hotel stay for the HoJo months ago, before the school district approved my daughters early enrollment into kindergarten waiver...as of today they agreed to allow her early admission to Kindegarten and this means she will miss 5 days of class in October? Is this terrible? It surely won't be a habit...but I'd like some feedback before I buy tickets for the parks tomorrow.
:/ mixed feelings on this one, as education and DL both hold a large place in my heart! :) - lynniesue42

My son has missed school due to family vacations before. I used to make sure he had his class work ahead of time. I don't see a problem as long as its not all the time. Enjoy your trip :) - Keala76

Thank you! :) I just don't want it to hinder her learning...I definitely intend to ask her teacher for her class work ahead of time so she stays on track. Thanks for the tip! - lynniesue42 229.4 #1254 11:47PM
Don't feel bad at all! These will be cherished memories for your family. My oldest two kids are 26 and 21.. My next set are 8 and 10. Time flies!!! Enjoy the moments while they are young. Make those memories! Soon enough, they will be grown up. My older two still cherish their Disney family trips..school work can be made up on the weekends when you get back. - 2BeignetOrNot2Beignet

We homeschool do we just make up time somewhere else. My parents used to take us out for a couple weeks to make Christmas a full month to fly out to family. My brother and I did well. We just got our assignments to do during vacation. It may depend on the kids. We did well with independent study and my parents were truly helpful. - Autoalice

I think it depends on your child. And who knows them better than you. My daughter is a second grader and we took her out in Oct and Feb for a week each time. We put her in independent study. School got paid, she had no recorded absences and she was givin the same work the other students were doing. No ill effects here. My husband and I have to take her out during the school year. Our jobs are hard to work around. - PrincessAuroraMomma

One week each for our elem, middle and high schooler. The key is getting that weeks work done BEFORE we go. The teachers have always worked with us and its never been a problem, all 6 yrs we've gone. We go the first week of Dec. so they don't miss finals or anything.... - DisneyDawn

I took my son out for a week. I got a work study packet for my boy to do. He loved putting in for the PE section how he ran from space mtn to toy story mania! 😄 we did a little bit of work every morning before we went to the parks and he did some on our long drive too. So worth it! He wasn't behind at all since we went in the beginning of the year - minnieMisty

My daughter has missed up to a week. We make sure to bring all of her work and set aside time to do it. She's a straight A student and my philosphy is as long as she keeps her grades up she's allowed a little play time. - LovePiglet76

I took my son out for a week two years ago to go to DL soooo worth it!! He is in 5th grade now and at the top of his class so didn't hinder him one bit. Life is about the memories you make with your children this is what they will cherish for years to come not always what they learn in school - julia4disney

My parents would usually let me miss a day for my birthday to go every year. They would pick a day I didn't have a test. Once in a while we would take a day off during the week and go as a family. Never more than a day, though. - LaneSparrow316

For us if they missed one or two days so we could go to DL we don't think it's that big of a deal. We just don't schedule the trips around times they do tests. Enjoy the time with your family. - Mickey_Badge
