Question. I heard from a CM that a way to find counterfeit pins is to run a magnet over them. If they're magnetic, they're fake. Does anyone know if this is true?

Search StrawberryGuy and he has a whole post about it. - Mrsblue  692.4 #145 7:56AM

Will do! Thank you so much :) - LivHeartsDL  4.7 #11166 7:58AM
If you google spotting fake pins you will see that magnets and black light are not effective in spotting fake pins. As Strawberry has said many times use your eyes to see if something on the front or back looks off and your fingers to make sure the edges are smooth and finished. A good reference for photos of legit pins is pinpics.com - mike714  334.9 #451 8:57AM
Uh oh! Pinpics.com?!? I'm going to waste so much time on there lol! I'm so happy I have MW because I really feel like im surrounded by a lot of knowledgeable people (I am not worthy!!!!) thank you for the info :D - LivHeartsDL  4.7 #11166 9:21AM
I know this works to a degree, but I have some pins that I'm almost sure are scrappers that are not magnetic. - Hop-Low  195.2 #1695 7:28AM
Yeah, for me it's vice versa. I bought a Winnie the pooh pin from DL, but it ended up being magnetic. - LivHeartsDL  4.7 #11166 7:32AM
Hmmmm, that throws my theory/ knowledge out the door. Was the pin just a rack pin? Where's strawberryguy, I know he has the answer to this. - Hop-Low  195.2 #1695 7:37AM
Yeah, I bought it at WOD. Though, it has rubberish stuff on it, he's covered in honey. So it is a different texture than other pins. But I tried the magnet test on all of my pins, and ended up having 34 be magnetic! Just wanted to know how reliable it was :c - LivHeartsDL  4.7 #11166 7:45AM
The magnet test is not conclusive. I brought a magnet to the Mouse Wait pin trading meet upĀ and we test several authentic pins that were magnetic. It seemed that the were only magnetic at the post. I assume they may add some stronger metal there to keep it from bending but that is just a guess. The "real" pin would not stick to the magnet very much. The fake pins there were magnetic held pretty tight. I would use your eyes and fingers to tell more then the magnet test. - BalooTBear  904.4 #97 9:26AM
