The Disneyland 1/2 Marathon in September is 73% full now (or 27% empty, depending on how you look at it). If you're a procrastinator like me, hurry up and register before its all full! π
I'm strongly considering the 5k. I normally don't run at all so that would be a HUGE accomplishment for me! - ladylikesdisney

Hey, run a little, then walk a little... then run a little, then walk a little... baby steps! Plus, you have plenty of time to train! JUST DO IT! You'll be proud after. Next step... the 1/2! 5 years and I'm still wanting to do the 1/2. Next year I will for sure! - DiscoSteve 252.3 #984 7:25PM
Same here ( I signed up)! I don't run at all but I know I can get through this 5K cos if my mom can survive breast cancer I can survive as well! - iamdugsmaster 756.6 #132 7:31PM
I really think I'm going to register once I get my tax return. I looked into it, and they only require an average of a 16 minute mile, which I could do walking I'm pretty sure. I really want a finisher medallion to commemorate that I actually did something outside of my comfort zone. - ladylikesdisney 921.5 #95 7:31PM
If I can do a half marathon, just about anybody can!! - LilSterner 2655.9 #17 11:14PM
I think I'm going to sign up for the 5k as well. But I want to try to run/jog the whole thing. - JenInWonderland 1025.1 #86 10:11AM
Jen, the 5K I did a few years ago was what sparked my love for running! Before training for that, I couldn't run 10 feet without getting massive side aches and out of breath. It is the perfect distance to really prepare your body and it won't take over your life training for. :) I'm excited for you! - Melliott 299.4 #613 10:44AM
Jen, that's my goal too. I thought about it last night and 7 months is plenty of time to train to run 3 miles - ladylikesdisney 921.5 #95 10:49AM
Look into the couch to 5k program. There are apps for it too. It's an excellent training program. - KissDclown 1088.1 #76 11:29AM
βwalkingβ a half marathon at a 16min/mile pace not doable... The average walking pace is well over 20min/mile. If you properly train (to walk or run), it can be done... like Ive said on here last year, its great to encourage people to set goals and reach them but we dont want to be giving running advice that could potentially hurt someone. - michelledork
658.3 #157 11:15PM
you should do it!! you'd be surprised at what you can do and what you think you can do!! I did a full marathon and that was heck!!! but my mind just blocked out the pain and ran haha!! :)) good luck!!! - emariegee

Since I can't go to Florida :( I might sign up for this tomorrow. - Nyghtngale
547.8 #203 11:11PM
Like michelledork and Mimmy have said, training is a must if you plan to do the half marathon. 13.1 miles is a long distance to keep up a brisk walking pace. But with the time available, it's definitely doable. - LilSterner
2655.9 #17 11:23PM
@ladylikesdisney You should! Honestly like BooEve said on a recent post, a 5K is the same amount of walking we do on a day trip to DL! Doing the 1/2 at 16min miles is totally doable. We still have almost 7 months to train, you can do it! ;) - Melliott

@teajack9 (sorry, I can't reply on my own post lol) It's $150 - Melliott

@ladylikesdisney: try the couch to 5K program! It makes it totally do-able! - cynDOLEwhip
744.1 #137 8:03PM
Is that an app? ;) I'll look it up, thanks. - ladylikesdisney 921.5 #95 8:05PM
There is a whole online program and some great apps that use the program! - cynDOLEwhip 744.1 #137 8:07PM
A 5K is totally do-able. A lot of people walk two or three times that in a single DL day :) - Spoonful_O_Sugar
435.7 #283 8:04PM
@ladylikesdisney: you should look into the couch to 5k program. It slowly helps build your endurance over a 9 or 10 week period. I'm on week 2 day 3 and doing pretty good (except the days I have the stroller...ugh!) - kss4tink

I completely agree with michelledork. While most people can walk a brisk 15 min mile, it's very difficult to keep that pace up for 13 miles. You need to train to be able to cover that distance either running or walking. That being said, you all have plenty of time to train, more than 6 months! Challenge yourself and commit to a training plan and you CAN do it! - Mimmy

@michelledork I was never telling anyone not to train. When I said she had almost 7 months, I thought that was a given. I don't think anyone could do 13 miles without training, and didn't suggest that. - Melliott
299.4 #613 11:33PM
I'm only doing the 5k, which is certainly doable. And of course I plan to train π - ladylikesdisney 921.5 #95 8:31AM
Yeah I think any type of exercise or race that is outside of your normal routine requires training! Though I'm sure some people do go into the 1/2 or even 5K thinking they can do it with no training, I can't imagine they get far. ;) - Melliott 299.4 #613 10:47AM
I believe the 5k is about 3 miles so It's definetly doable. - HollyGolightlyPrincess

Want to SO bad, but I tore my Achilles and I'm not sure I'll be up to snuff by then. Wouldn't want to waste the money. Might try for the Tinkerbell half in Jan if they do it again. - MissFortuosity
52.4 #3692 8:18AM
Ouch! I definitely don't blame you, you need to recover! I think I'd be scared to do anything active after having that injury. :/ - Melliott 299.4 #613 8:32AM
They are doing the Tinkerbell half again next year. My mom found the dates. I'm pretty sure it's around the end of January again. :) - PixarDreamer 245.8 #1040 8:46AM
Yes I just looked as though I can't remember the dates because I'm a dork, I know you have 344 days to train. ;) - Melliott 299.4 #613 10:48AM
I'm on the mend, but all I've been cleared for so far is walking, and I have to admit that doing anything more dies scare me a bit. I'm really excited to hear that the Tinkerbell will be back next year, the should be plenty of time :) - MissFortuosity 52.4 #3692 1:27PM
When? My brother ruptured his Achilles and had a repair back in may, so he isn't allowed to run until a year has passed. - bluefairy 627.0 #173 6:12PM
I really want to do the 5k. That's about all I can do. Lol. So who wants to do it with me?? - ohhhtoodles

I just booked it last night! I'm excited! - PrinceTeaJack 779.5 #120 8:38AM
I will. I have already signed up for it. I love to walk / run.....especially Disney 5k. They are a lot of fun!!! - NancyLuvsEeyore 249.3 #1011 8:40AM
I am hoping a bunch of MWers can get together for this. I really think it would be fun!! - ohhhtoodles 365.2 #379 8:46AM
I signed up for the fun run last week. If i can walk 18 miles in 4 hrs for breast cancer i can walk the fun run. I dont want to have jello legs. - ScarfGirl
551.6 #199 8:44AM
That is awesome. Such an amazing cause. Yes...you can do this especially after that!! - ohhhtoodles 365.2 #379 8:47AM
After doing the 18 miles i was out for 2 days! I couldnt feel my legs. But it was all worth it! - ScarfGirl 551.6 #199 8:51AM
I'm sure!! I hear its like that for a lot of people but everyone said it was worth every bruise and blister. I would love to accomplish that too. It's on my personal goal list. - ohhhtoodles 365.2 #379 8:55AM
Funny thing was that when my lil sister signed me up n told me from where to where we were walking i was like ehhh piece of cake! So i didnt train nothing! I did it with no problems but yeah i dont recommend you just jumping in. But when i finished it felt so empowering! Now everytime i pass where i did it i smile! - ScarfGirl 551.6 #199 9:04AM
That is so awesome girly!! Congested on that!!! - ohhhtoodles 365.2 #379 9:05AM
* Congrats (silly auto correct) - ohhhtoodles 365.2 #379 9:06AM
That's so funny! But you finished, so that's pretty awesome! - Melliott 299.4 #613 10:49AM
@ladylikesdisney consider getting a kettlebell workout! I'm doing the Bob Harper ones to strengthen my legs and core muscles. It's pretty intense, and will help tone the muscle in your legs for a comfortable run or jog even :) They sell it at Target. Just be sure to get a weight you can handle, like 10-15 lbs would be a good start :) - TheBudd
357.3 #395 10:54AM
Thanks for the advice! I wonder if my gym has them. I'll have to look into it - ladylikesdisney 921.5 #95 10:57AM
If your gym has a free weight area where the dudes go to lift and grunt, then most likely yes they will have them! The workout DVD I mentioned comes with a 30 min workout AND the kettlebell to do it for less than $40. Just do what you can til it burns, then stop and let your muscles repair over the next day. - TheBudd 357.3 #395 11:05AM
I've been doing kettlebells for 5 years! I used to work at a gym and took my first class and was hooked. Now I use Andrea DuCane's DVDs. Totally awesome complement to running! - Spoonful_O_Sugar 435.7 #283 11:16AM
Thank you both for the input! Added kettlebells to my to do list - ladylikesdisney 921.5 #95 11:18AM
I really wanna do the 5k but im so extremely out of shape and I have leg problems so it's only a dream for me /: - oowllovee
