I need an honest answer. If the next Disneyland 1/2 marathon is in September and I can now run about 3 miles w/o walking, how hard will it be to be able to run 13 miles in the next 7 months? I've been working out a lot and I've always wanted to run a 1/2, plus my birthday is the day before and it would be such an awesome accomplishment! I think signing up now will give me the kick in the pants to be ready, but my husband (while trying to not be discouraging) thinks it's going to be REALLY tough. What do you think?

if it is too tough for you, you'll pick yourself up, dust yourself off, work out more, ready for the next challenge that comes your way, and do it again next year, knowing what to expect. never give up. all it takes is faith and trust. - SoloSiyoNqoba  565.3 #196 3:27PM

Thank you Solo! - Melliott  299.4 #614 10:17PM
That's plenty of time to train for a half marathon. You could be up to 10 miles in 2?months if you train right - Dave  8640.6 #2 3:30PM
If you can run 3 miles right now, you have a good base, providing you're otherwise in good health.  Remember, you can walk some of it if you need to--you don't have to run the whole 13.1.  You just have to keep a 16 minute/mile pace.  you definitely have enough time to train, though. - Spoonful_O_Sugar  436.2 #285 3:43PM
Yes and I definitely couldn't run the whole 13- unless God blesses me with superstar endurance before then. I just want to run as much as possible, and walk when needed. This has been a dream of mine for a long time and I think if I don't sign up now I'll just come up with excuses. - Melliott  299.4 #614 3:55PM
Most experts recommend you take walk breaks. Your finish time can actually be faster if you do this, rather than try to run the whole thing. - Mimmy  1405.6 #57 3:59PM
I know you can do it!!! Don't ever underestimate what your body can do. I went from not running to running 20 miles in 7 m. The tips I can give you is 1. Stretch stretch stretch 2. Do runners exercise focus on your core and legs also shoulders 3. Coconut water rather then sport drinks 4. The app Micoach. 5. Don't push your self to hard 6. Enjoy the journey not the finish. I will also be running that same race. I was training for the La Marathon a hurt my knee from pushing my self to hard, also stay away from running down hills. And get good shoes. Good luck - rubedog  23.6 #4773 4:02PM
You can run 20 miles in 7 minutes? - Mouse4life  1075.6 #79 4:47PM
I think he meant in 7 months, he built up to running 20 mileage. - Mimmy  1405.6 #57 5:05PM
Lol thank you Rubedog! - Melliott  299.4 #614 10:21PM
Think about joining a running group with a training program suited to different levels of fitness (like Running Room). Not only will they get you ready for a half, but will keep you motivated! At your current level, you'd be ready for a half in 13 weeks! - GoCanucks10  229.7 #1245 6:56AM
Not that tough. If you end up walking half of it, who cares? You can do it. - Mouse4life  1075.6 #79 3:26PM
If you have the time to train I think you can do it! Remember you need at least a couple of hours on the weekend to run long distance between your training during the week. - JenInWonderland  1025.1 #86 3:30PM
If you have a treadmill start right away with the inlcine on at least 3, it really builds up the muscles around your ankles and knees that is important for long distance. Plus when you have to go a distance at a regular slop it will be much easier. Its hard at first but once you get used to it it has good results. - madsdad  1125.1 #73 3:33PM
incline - madsdad  1125.1 #73 3:33PM
Thanks! We just got rid of a broken treadmill, I'm wishing I had invested in a repairman instead. :/ - Melliott  299.4 #614 10:23PM
Train with intervals. Run for a few minutes and then walk for a few. Next thing you know 13 miles has gone by. Up the time of your intervals with time. 7 months is plenty of time to get there. - AKMouse  376.5 #364 3:36PM
You can absolutely do it. I followed the tink training guide which is a lot of 3 miles or 30 minute runs with long runs every other weekend working your mileage up to the 1/2 marathon. - supertracy  435.6 #286 3:49PM
I am definitely going to utilize any help I can find- I really need it! - Melliott  299.4 #614 10:22PM
You don't have to run the whole thing. A run/walk combo is perfect. If you cam run 3 miles straight, you will be fine!! My first 1/2, I went from practically no exercise to completing the race with 3 months of training. There are training plans to help you increase your mileage a mile per week. You've got plenty of time and will be able to do it! - Mimmy  1405.6 #57 3:57PM
Thank you Mimmy!! If you don't mind sharing any of those links w me I would so appreciate any help! - Melliott  299.4 #614 4:13PM
Absolutely!! I have a couple of training books to. My email address is in my profile. Send me an email so I can message you back with some info! - Mimmy  1405.6 #57 5:05PM
I will definitely do that, thank you so much! Are you running tomorrow? - Melliott  299.4 #614 7:35PM
I haven't trained properly, so I'll be walking mostly. But I plan to get that medal! :-) - Mimmy  1405.6 #57 7:54PM
Although my nickname is Marathon Man, I can't help you with this one as I'm not a long distance runner. But I did a half marathon years ago and it almost killed me.  - splashphotoCM  880.9 #101 4:37PM
Okay, you get to be my cheerleader. ;) - Melliott  299.4 #614 4:41PM
Be happy to. Can I do without the uniform? - splashphotoCM  880.9 #101 5:15PM
Nope. Cheerleader uniform a must. - Melliott  299.4 #614 10:20PM
Oh my gosh, I can't thank you guys enough. My husband seemed so unsure that I could do this that I really started to question the reality of it. (Keep in mind he's the one that sees the lazy me, pigging out on candy instead working out. ;) But I truly believe in my heart I can do this, and you guys only confirmed that! I so do appreciate all your kind words!! ๐Ÿ˜˜ - Melliott  299.4 #614 4:44PM
If you believe you can do it, then you can!! I'm thinking of doing it myself but the most I've ever run is 6.5 miles and I'm quite out of shape now. Good luck with your training!! ๐Ÿ˜Š - PirateQueenBriezy  291.4 #661 4:48PM
keep your eye on the goal! you CAN do it!! - HandMeAChurroImmaFaint  1799.0 #42 4:48PM
Then I should cheer you on by loading up a remote controlled truck loaded with chocolate in front of you. lol - splashphotoCM  880.9 #101 5:19PM
and wellness (suppliment) giveaway soon so keep an eye out! - donnievegas  1127.5 #72 5:21PM
Splash, you'd be surprised (or not) how well that would work. ;) - Melliott  299.4 #614 10:19PM
Thanks for the heads up Donnie! - Melliott  299.4 #614 10:20PM
You can definitely do it, 7 months is a lot of time. I ran a half marathon a few years ago and I did fine but never again haha. Too long for me. Good luck! - chelseafeilen  241.3 #1098 5:22PM
You can definately do it!! 3 months ago I couldn't even run 1/2 a mile at 4mph, now I'm running 6 miles at 5.5mph. It can be done. My goal is a half marathon this spring :) - Disneycrazymom  99.5 #3040 5:55PM
That's so awesome! Thank you for the encouragement! - Melliott  299.4 #614 10:18PM
This sounds like something you're do excited to do! If possible, maybe go to your local gym and tell your goal to a trainer and then they can advise you how best to be ready in 7 months. I hope to see some pictures of you at the finish line come September!!! - ima-pirateswife  432.4 #289 7:39PM
Go check out Jeff Galloway from Run Disney. He has a program that if you follow, you will finish. I problem. I will be running Disney half for second time this year. - streetsweeper  441.7 #280 7:55PM
I will definitely do that, thanks!! - Melliott  299.4 #614 10:18PM
7 months from where you describe your current fitness level is actually enough to train for a full 26.2 mile marathon, if you have the time and dedication. Ive been in the situation and did a 10k, then half, then full marathon in the timeframe, but it was tough to juggle time since work and family come first. and I was able to complete those running nonstop. so I think you can definitely do the 13.1 miles in 7 months. Go for it! - mase310  9.9 #6808 10:37PM
Wow that's amazing. I wanna be like you! :) The time will probably be the biggest trouble for me, because we homeschool and my kids are with me 24/7. I can't just go running or go to the gym whenever I want, so I'm going to have to be VERY purposeful to make this work. But that would be so awesome to run a full marathon! - Melliott  299.4 #614 6:38AM
I don't know how I did it myself and don't recommend it, but I didn't start training until 5 weeks before. I was already able to jog with a good pace for 3 miles without issue. When it got crunch time, I trained 3 times a week for 5 weeks until the 1/2 marathon date. I was up to 6 1/2 miles by then. Never in my life ran further. My body impressed me on run day. I actually bettered my goal of under 2 1/2 hours with an 11min mile on average, and I didn't walk once. - Mouse92im  254.9 #959 6:58AM
I'm at about the same level. I've signed up for the Labor Day 1/2. I just figure I won't be able to stop for photo ops because I'll have to stop somewhere and walk a bit. We've got a long time to get ready. Don't delay signing up, someone told me it's already 57% full. When you go to the rundisney website it will tell you where they're at. I jumped in with both feet. We can do this!! - 415beachgirl  469.0 #259 7:25AM
Yay! Are you excited? I looked yesterday and they were at 51%. I want to sign up now but I might have to wait a week because of $. But I need to do it ASAP so that I don't have an excuse! - Melliott  299.4 #614 7:36AM
Very doable with hard work and a work out schedule, there are several books and even apps that will break a running schedule down for you week by week depending how far out your race is. 6 months is plenty of time to get you across the finish line. I have 7 halfs under my belt, I hope you fin the same passion in runnin as I did. :-) good luck! - AKSiiri  145.6 #2359 7:35AM
