I totally agree! I'm a high school teacher and I hear that from the students all the time. I can't stand it and I am constantly explaining how inappropriate it is. - 2princessdad

I ban tha word in my class too. Then I give them the biggest lecture - MarshaMouse 2864.4 #15 1:08AM
I'll chime in on this one. Being from the construction field I work with some rough people (good people at heart) and there is nothing that is sacred sometimes when everyone is BSing. I have used this phrase an unknown amount of times in the past. I have sense stopped doing this because of my great family here. I have met people I call my friend and they have open my eyes to how "fabulous" the gay community is. Change only comes to those who want it. You can ask, pled, or demand for it all you want, but deaf is deaf. Thank you MW for helping me become a better person. It truly is my intention in life to grow as a person everyday ( good luck. Lol) and my family here makes it a lot easier. - Evilstitch

Excellent idea. I'm always surprised when I hear people say that. Or retarded... It's just insensitive. - Mimmy

I wish it still meant happy like back in the good old days. It's sad how this world has turned something good into a horrible thing. - MagicalCaprice

Actually, either usage of the word, meaning happy, or meaning of an alternate lifestyle, seems okay. It is when the word is co-opted to mean stupid, ignorant, lame, or just not cool. I am related to a gay person (non-traditional sexual orientation), and had a sister that was always gay (perpetually happy). I have to, in the past, used the word inappropiately, and try now not too. But to say that it doesn't happen would be a lie. - SorcererBHhaha 408.5 #318 2:11PM
I hope by "horrible thing," you don't mean what I think you mean. - bluefairy 627.1 #174 5:32PM
No no! I mean that they took the word and made into something offensive. I could have worded that better. My bad. - MagicalCaprice 480.6 #248 5:34PM
I really want the word retarded gone. Both of my kids are special needs and this one kills me. My son has the genetic disorder that causes some of the most severe mental impairments, and when I hear people use it I just want to slap them. There are far better descriptive words availabe than "gay" and "retatded". - Cinderellamomma

Yet another word I 86. This one surprised me kinda when I thought about. Because I grew up around special needs children, yet I never made the connection of hurting people with the word. The world is changing. Change take time. We'll get there. - Evilstitch 330.3 #474 8:22AM
I agree with MagicalCaprice. How about we use "gay" for it's original intended purpose for "happy", rather than to denote some sort of sexual orientation? - SpencerPhreak

While I don't agree that popular jargon uses the afore mentioned words correctly, I remind everyone that they are just words. They have no meaning or power other than what you, the interpreter, give them. If you choose to get upset because of the way someone uses a word that is your choice and not their fault. But I will say that if someone is using a word to intentionally be offensive or hurtful then by all means rip em a new one because their intent is to hurt - regardless of the words they choose. But this is where personal responsibility comes in. You must find it within yourself to know who and what you are and teach your children to do the same. Words have no power unless we give it to them (thanks Harry Potter). Now I retire from my soap box and let you return to your regularly scheduled RAKs and such. - BlueberryCrusader

Awesome post Tina! I was down at the High school on Friday and that word flies around like it has wings! I told the counselor that these kids truly need to be educated. - Mrsblue
