Got most of these pins on eBay for my son to start a pin collection for our trip this summer. They are for Christmas. My question is: is there "bad" pins out there and how can you tell? I'm very new to this and so clueless. Any tips??
Yes there are counterfeits and pins called scrappers (made officially but didn't pass the quality control) sometimes its easy to tell others are not, unless it was purchased from Disney there is no way to know with 100% certainty that it's an authentic pin - Pixarprincess

Some will still trade them. If you buy on eBay, look at the overall feedback of who you are buying from and look for reputable top sellers. Most importantly, if he likes them and is having fun, that's all that matters. - unclebeezy

Do people still trade or want to trade if they are scrappers and such?? A couple of these are hidden Mickey ones and all but one are from Disneyland and one is a Disneyland Paris one. All of them have the Mickey backs to them. - dennibowles

Cast Members are obliged to trade. As long as its pin of disney type. If they know its a fake they will put it aside and get rid of it later. - Evilstitch 328.3 #481 8:38AM
This is how my daughter started trading. We never had a problem with bad pins. Actually, once one of the serious pin traders with books of pins honed in on one of her pins, he really wanted it. She trades withe cm's only now. It's so much fun. You can even trade at stores. Make sure the pins are secure. She had quite a few now nut she loses some ever time she wears her lanyard.

Invest in the locking pinbacks for really special pins. I have these on all my CM pins. They are a little expensive but worth it on an LE pin. They also sell these in hardware stores and may be cheaper. - splashphotoCM 880.9 #100 2:34PM
We still get the occasional fake, we just don't worry about it. Sometimes you can tell by how thin and/or light they are. The fakes often have odd colors on them as well.
We have reached the point where we avoid most of the pin traders (at least the ones who camp out in the parks) and mostly just trade with CMs. - sjthespian

I talked to a CM and they told me 2 ways to check for real pins... make sure the paint/enamel if filled in all the way (no indents) & the side have to be completely smooth (no rough edges) ...look at pins in the park and compare =) - StitchEars

Other collectors have stated that there is a copyright c on the back of legit pins. Also something about "tacks" that protrude by the pin on back. This is what I have read, so you will want to ask. TMI in this case can't hurt. - SorcererBHhaha
