I went ALL the time as a kid and I still remember this one time both my parents picked me up from school which I thought was strange since only my mom picked up from school and we just started driving, I must have been about 8 or 9. They wouldn't tell me where we were going and for some reason I just didn't get it until we got there. I was still surprised!!!! I am sure you could surprise your son somehow :D
