I have a question, I do not mean to be rude here, but why does everyone who lives in So Cal think that "Nor Cal" is in San Francisco? That's more central. I'm sadly stuck up here in Nor Cal. Would like to go back to where my heart is. Hahaha
I also live in Norcal and San Francisco(it's an hour and a half east of me) is actually Norcal. There is no central, it's either north or south. I live exactly where the center of CA should be but no, we are Norcal. Don't know why exactly. - ❤MellieKay❤

actually I have a lot of friends born and raised in the bay...they refer to that area themselves as NorCal...and yes I lived in NorCal for 5 years...Arcata...can't get too much further NorCal then that. - toph

My dad worked in Arcata for a year. Beautiful up there! My grandParent lived in Fort Bragg for years. The northern coast is beautiful! I'm in the central valley right by the bay area. - ❤MellieKay❤

Yeah, my dad complained about the rain as well haha. Infact it stormed the whole weekend we visited. He moved back here in July and thought he was going to die from the heat haha. - ❤MellieKay❤

SF is part of NorCal. There is a central and it's usually Fresno, Modesto, Visalia, Coalinga and all those other farm type places in the Central and San Joaquin Valleys etc. Generally anywhere that smells funny on the 5 or 99. By funny I mean au natural and no offense to the central valley - cesium55

As a native Southern Californian, I refer to anything north of Santa Barbara as NorCal!!! LOL. I mean I know that technically there is a central CA, but it's all up north to me! - Mimmy

I grew up in the east bay and that is definitely NorCal. I think of central CA as the SLO area and east over to Modesto, etc. I call Carmel and up NorCal. - DaisyBell

As someone who also lives in Fresno, I do not get how we could be considered NorCal since we are clearly in the middle of the state. Anything over the grapevine is NorCal IMO...as soon as you get over the mountain you definitely feel like you are in southern California. No need to be offended by silly stuff like this. But Carmel's on the coast so it's kinda special. But for some reason I consider it NorCal still. the smell is just that weird grassy, tangy smell. I'm not even talking about the cows. That's something else altogether but I went to school in Davis so that's normal ;) - cesium55

I agree we're all just Californians, but the main difference I see between NorCal and SoCal is good beach weather and Disneyland. There's no denying that SoCal has something special going for it, housing the Happiest Place on Earth. Not that we don't have a lot of gems of our own in North Cali. I think most people who arent really familiar with NorCal can identify with SanFran as part of the North because it's one of the best-known cities. - poppet

I spent summers in the valley Modesto to be exact and the bay area - San Jose and palo alto. When I was a child I would consider it to be in the same area novak. We would drive down to SD to visit family and once we hit Valencia past the grapvine we were in Socal - staygoldponyboy

I grew up in the san francisco bay area and we always considered it part of nor cal. I now live in so cal (la). If you take the state as a whole and split into north and south, san francisco would end up in the northern half, so I think that's why. But I could be wrong. - partygurlone

i think it's this... the coastal part of CA has norcal and socal. then when you get more inland there becomes a central CA. but the bay area does count as norcal. - GlassSlippers

I can't believe this is so controversial. As a person who has lived in "Nor Cal" and in "Central Cali" I can defiantly tell you there is a difference. San Fran IS nor cal the coast is a part of this nor cal vs do cal thing. central cali is from about turlock till bakersfield. When your on 99 outside of fresno there are 2 trees one pine tree and one palm tree representing Nor Cal and So Cal. It's kinda cool. - nappingbeauty

SF IS part of NorCal! I lived in CA (Sacramento Area) my entire life (40yrs) and you hardly ever hear people say they live in Central Cali, it is either NorCal or SoCal. - ZBrerFox

I was just saying that someone who moved from Palmdale up to northern Ca I just considered it like looking at a map of California that I just saw SF as being more then the middle of Ca. I live in the Central Valley...and it sucks. Anything above Fresno/Clovis is NorCal anything below is SoCal. You can't get more dead center than Fresno. Used to live in Livermore/Pleasanton. I consider that NorCal even though it's East Bay. - DisneyBride°O°
