This day in Disney history, September 2nd, 1979. The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction opens in Disneyland's Frontierland. The "wildest ride in the wilderness" takes guests careening through dark caverns & abandoned mines. Imagineer Tony Baxter modeled the attraction after the scenery of Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah.
Awww. That ride scared the crap out of me as a kid and soured me on roller coasters for my whole childhood. Now, 25 years later, it's my favorite coaster there. LOL. Ironic....

I remember watching it being built. Couldn't wait to ride it, and as with all Disney rides it was worth the wait. - mlatour

Love it! When I first rode this, the ride was 3 years old. This is my first Disney memory. I remember running right past the CM to get on then having to go back to check my height. My mom claimed I was the loudest one but I was screaming out of sheer fun! Thus the beginning of a beautiful friendship with all wild rides. Thanks for sharing! - cesium55

Also they kept some of stuff from the Rainbow caverns mine train. This is oneof the bext attractions around. I am always amazed on how at time it really feels like a runaway train.
