Scrappers usually have scratch marks or divots in the paint. They also have different color paint sometimes. The back also may look sloppy. Also if the silver/gold lines are too thick. It is sometimes hard to tell scrappers right away. So just trade as normal and look online when you get home. Pin pics is the best. You'll be able to tell if the color is off and sometimes it will even say whether or not there are scrappers made of a certain pin. - JessicaRabbit33

Be weary buying lots on ebay. I bought one from someone who had a very positive rating and 21/25 pins were scrappers! They did give me a full refund, however. Also a lot of cast members could have scrappers as well. Because of this reason, I'm just going to collect pins and not do too much trading. - JenInWonderland

@Jen. I have been buying lots from an eBay seller and have been happy with them. I only bid from US merchants, won't bid on chinese merchants. - mike714

Yeah, My boyfriend and I have a couple fake pins. They are pins that we really like anyways, and wouldn't want to trade them, so it's not really been a big deal. We've seen lots of fakes on Cast Member lanyards. There is also a trick if the pin has the micky head indents on the back. If the indents don't run off the edge(aka there is a border on the edge of the back of the pin) than it's a fake. - kimmie-d

@jen. Sorry to hear that. I bought a Cast Member Lanyard set off of ebay and it was fine. But I already had one of the pins from the set so I could check. - sr citizen space ranger

The way my gf and I found out is through the method above, by seeing if the mickeys on the back run off the edges. If there's a border around the back of the pin it's fake. In general the images are also sharper on the real pins. We also compared our pins to the Disney store site and noticed dots (small details, I know) had different arrangements. Lastly, an obvious sign of a fake pin would be an off center trademark in the back. I hope these help and thank you to everyone else who commented on this topic =) - stitchter

If a fake is super obvious on a CM lanyard, you can tell the CM it is a fake. Most of the time they will remove it from their lanyard and sometimes even replace it with a real pin (if they are stationed in a store). - JessicaRabbit33
