The dancing man. Walt made it himself. - WallFamily

Well I'm stumped! I thought it was the Tiki Room birds, and if not those, then the singing bird in a cage that inspired Walt Disney to pursue AAs. One website I found said it was the robin from Mary Poppins, but if it's "not a bird," then it can't be that either. Anyone else have a guess? - Gruyère

Yes, the giant squid from 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. Congrats Mrs. White! - Nov181928

I've never seen the movie. Does the squid talk? - Gruyère
18.2 #5233 8:02PM
Ha! Nope, no talking on the squids part. - Mrs.White

I disagree. I would say the Tiki room birds were developed first. Maybe the squid made his debut first, but the tiki room birds were created first, to my knowledge. - LaceySue

The first true Audio-Animatronic technology was used for the birds in The Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland, which opened in 1963. for this the Imagineers had devised a system to control the actions by means of magnetic recording tape and solenoid coils. The signals recorded on the tape triggered solenoid coils inside the figures, producing action. - From MagicalKingdoms.com - LaceySue

If it doesn't talk, it isn't an *audio* animatronic. It would just be an animated prop. - Gruyère

Per multiple online sources: The squid wasn't a FULL AUDIO- animatronic. THe first apperance of those were in the Tiki room. The first FILM appearance of an audio animatronic was the bird the Julie sings to in Mary Poppins. The squid doesn't count! - LaceySue

Nov is kind of close. Disney's first EVER animatronic venture was in 1951. He was a puppet type, and was called "Project Little Man". He used cables and tubes, but didn't speak. They used this exact technology for the squid, along with the jungle cruise and the now defunct Natures Wonderland. - LaceySue

OK, I read that Lee Adams was the originator of AA and that the squid was the first, but if Lacey says it wasn't a full AA then I believe it. Again, congratulations to Mrs. White. - Nov181928

Haha. I've read one too many imagineering books. You are right that is was the first commercially used animatronic figure, but there was no audio. =] - LaceySue

To my understanding the term 'audio animatronic' has nothing to do with the ability to speak or even generate sound. It is 'audio' because the motion was recorded on audio tape as a signal because it could be looped and replayed easily. Also they could make a master reel and as the tapes used wore out they could run a new version from the original. I think all this stemmed from the size and expense of early computer equipment. It's been a long time since I learned about this so if I am way off I apologize. Lacey you wanna jump in on this for me? - BlueberryCrusader

You are correct, and that still makes the Tiki birds first. Like I said, the squid was strictly run by a puppeteer type system with tubes and cables, not by recorded motion... That is my understanding, and I heard that straight from an interview Tony Baxter... so I'd believe it. - LaceySue
328.8 #475 8:38PM
So I'm finding ONE article that claims the squid came first, but that article didn't specify anything about his innerworkings... so I'm still going with the tiki room birds, since every other source of Disney knowledge, including Walt AND Tony, are saying that it was a different technology and the Tiki room birds are the first real audio animatronics. - LaceySue
328.8 #475 8:41PM
@Lacey does it say anything about Dancing Man?? - WallFamily
25.3 #4626 8:43PM
I posted the dancing man earlier... he was the first experiment used by Disney, to test the animatronic process. His exact technology was used for the squid. But the tiki room birds were the first that were REAL audio animatronics. - LaceySue
