Hey everyone! I just wanted to share something that happened today at the Paradise pier pool. My 4 year old nephew ran away from his mom while she was at the top of the water slide and he jumped into the big pool and was drowning. Sadly, the life guards were not paying attention to the pool. Luckily, there was a couple that was by the pool and noticed he was drowning and pulled him out. I want to thank that couple who saved my nephews life.

Oh my goodness! How scary! So lucky that that couple was paying attention! - kritomiester  328.3 #484 6:56PM
Wow glad he's ok. I would have said something to the lifeguards. - nanibear  29.1 #4420 7:02PM

As a lifeguard of over 15 years and a lifeguard trainer for over 10 years this post really makes me mad!!! I'm soo glad no one was hurt but I would have said something to the lifeguard - Lifeguardmom  292.5 #658 7:21PM
I hope the incident has been reported to the resort. - Spoonful_O_Sugar  436.3 #285 7:27PM
Heavens to Betsy!!! That is very shocking and sad to hear! Especially with lifeguards present and not one paying attention to their job is! This could have turned out really bad! God bless the kind couple who became true heros today!! Glad he is ok :) - LittleGreenAlien  244.8 #1059 7:36PM
So glad this turned out ok, I had a former student who wasn't so lucky.  - bluefairy  627.4 #174 8:55PM
Always get the lifeguards name and report it. Being a lifeguard is not a job that should be taking lightly. The guards should be scanning a zone left to right and bottom to top using a 10x10 guideline. Grrrr still pretty steamed about this one - Lifeguardmom  292.5 #658 8:58PM
Thank God he is ok!! - iheartDumbo  24.3 #4730 8:59PM
We got the life guards names and reported them. If that couple wouldn't have been there this would have been tragic. What's crazy was that the couple wasnt even by the pool, they were on the other side. But for some reason they got up and went to the pool and that's when they saw him. No doubt god was with my nephew. - TheGirlWhoHasEverything  205.5 #1548 9:45PM
OMG im so glad your nephew is okay! im sorry the lifegaurds didnt do their jobs. im glad you reported them tho cause thats a life were talkin about. Hopefully youll get a little something out of it - NeverlandTink  421.4 #304 9:50PM
That is one position that I constantly see open at the resort. I just applied for it seasonally so let's hope that I can get in there and make a difference. 16yr EMT and I don't have time to play high school games, especially when you are hired to GUARD peoples lives! - DiscoSteve  252.3 #990 9:51PM
Wow! I am so glad he is ok and how scary for his mama and you! - Missshelly  690.3 #147 9:54PM
i think it's a shame that the lifeguards weren't doing what they were hired to do and am thankful that people noticed and took action about this, but what about the mom? i understand kids can sneak away (i got lost at disneyland once because i was doing my own thing) but as a parent, especially at a pool, shouldn't you be keeping a better eye on your child? - nikkiribas  322.1 #516 9:55PM
I agree. I have 3 small children and when at a pool they never leave my side unless with their dad. I am glad that the couple saved him, too bad about the life guards but also sad that every adult he was with failed to know where he was until he was drowning? Unless we are missing a bit of the story? Again, glad he is safe. - Krissy Marissy  411.0 #317 9:59PM
What happened was that my sister was at the top of the water slide with her 2 kids (which is a very high water slide). My nephew was the first one to slide down and eight when he landed, he ran to the pool (Which is out of sight of the slide). My sister saw him take off so she grabbed my 6th old niece's hand and tried to run down the big flight of stairs after him. But by the time she got to the pool the couple had already pulled him out. This happened in a matter of seconds. Plus, my sister could never out run my nephew. Anyways the point is that accidents can happen, and they can happen to anyone and that's what the life guards are there for. - TheGirlWhoHasEverything  205.5 #1548 10:15PM
I'm so glad this was a happy ending! - cinderella5  331.1 #470 10:19PM
I sadly disagree. You do not go up on a slide when you have a kid or kids unsupervised by a pool that cannot swim and do not have a life jacket on. It is not the lifeguards responsibility to babysit. They are there for emergencies and while it sounds like they failed on their end as well, ultimitely it is the parents responsibility. Kids are quick! I am so glad he is okay. Did the hotel do anything for your family? - SupremeLeader  394.0 #341 10:20PM
Why was he sliding down by himself if he can't swim? I'm very glad that the couple saved him and thank god no one was hurt. There are several lessons to be learned here. It's never too early to teach your kids to swim and float, as well as drilling into their heads pool safety and rules. I'm sure his parents learned lessons today too. And let's hope the lifeguards learned something as well so this doesn't happen again. - Mimmy  1405.6 #57 10:21PM
I just thought of this right now but when me and my family were staying at the grand , me and my daughter were in the Lil baby pool they have and she started to cough cause she got water in her mouth on accident and there was lifeguard not to far from us. That lifeguard turned around so fast to see if she was in trouble but saw see was ok and smiled.  I was very happy to see that she was really doing her job and paid closed attention to her surroundings. - nanibear  29.1 #4420 10:22PM
We spent many hours on that water slide last summer and we had two adults so one went down then the kids then the other adult. There is always an attendent at the top and bottom of that slide. And even when we were sitting in lawn chairs watching just our kids slide (my kids are older) the attendant at the bottom didn't let our kids leave the slide until he had made eye contact with me. Maybe the life gaurds weren't on the ball, but the mom isn't blameless. She should have sent the older child down first and then him and then herself. But if he can't swim he had no business sliding down alone. I hope everyone involved learned a big lesson today. - Mrsblue  692.4 #146 10:29PM
We really don't want or expect anything. We're just happy that he's ok. And that those life guards pay better attention to what's going on. Because even if it's the parent's fault, accidents happen and when a child is drowning the responsibility is not only of the parents but it becomes the responsibility of the life guard as well because they are getting paid to keep everyone safe. All opinions are respected. - TheGirlWhoHasEverything  205.5 #1548 10:33PM
Don't they have life vests available there for little kids? I know they do at the Grand... That could have helped a lot in this case, especially on a 4 year old. - Roboito  317.0 #538 10:37PM
I completely agree that the safety of a child in a pool is both of the parent and of the life guard. - TheGirlWhoHasEverything  205.5 #1548 10:39PM
The mom should not have let that child go down the slide by himself while she sayed up top. She should have been more responsible herself. Clearly she put her childs safety in danger. You can never rely on someone else. You have to be more cautious in those situations! - LittleGreenAlien  244.8 #1059 12:14AM
You can't put the full blame on the life guards, I see parents all the time at Disney not monitoring their kids and this is another example. No toddler should be in a pool without some form of a floating device, that's common sense. Disney should make it mandatory to wear those. - mstiauna27  89.3 #3160 12:22AM
 true dat. When I baby sit my little cousins i don't even let them be in the other room!! Although the lifeguard should of been paying attention. How does this happen?!? - mozbaby  132.2 #2563 12:24AM
Please keep in mind he's 4 years old. Kids run! It's hard to keep up with them. I know this from experience. Thank God someone was there to help. Glad he's okay. (: - ericalynn  210.0 #1495 12:26AM
As a former lifeguard manager this was one of my biggest fears...that someone would drown when they weren't paying attention. Keeping my lifeguards involved and rotating constantly was key. Accidents happen and one shouldn't really be quick to blame. - MozPrincess  577.4 #190 12:31AM
I'm glad your nephew is okay you guys are truly blessed, there is a similar story that came on the news right now & that baby is in critical condition, I pray he will get better & everyone realizes the dangers with small children & pools. - NoodleDance(Jsea)  6.9 #8267 12:33AM
