The illusion of Main Street~ When you walk towered the castle, Main Street looks longer, but when you walk towards the train station, it looks shorter. Walt Disney wanted his guests to feel like they were walking towards a magical castle in the morning. Then while leaving, it looked like the exit was so close, that guests would rush into the stores on Main Street and buy their souvenirs. (the pictures may be easier to see on the web version)

I've actually heard differently..(agreeing more with Admin though)..that the castle was made to look closer, to be inviting. And the exit was made to feel too far away..as to encourage guests to stay & spend money!
