A friend of mine worked at a summer camp many years ago (like 20+?). One of the campers was named Ariel and the rumor was that her dad was involved in TLM and the character was actually named after her. Dunno how true that is.... - Mimmy

I know the original story of The Little Mermaid was written by Hans Christian Andreson, I'm not sure that the character was named in his version though. - TandAlly
