After having done a few RAKs and sent items to the USA and Australia from Canada I wanted to advise other people doing RAKs that shipping internationally isn't as expensive as you realize. Shipping a small packet airmail from Canada to the USA was under $3 and to Australia was under $5. Next time you mail a RAK why not ask the post office how much it would cost if it was mailed to Canada or Australia (or wherever). It's probably less than you think. That way we can spread the joy even farther!
I sent a 2 pound package to Australia and it was $2.87. Super cheap. - ERICKA

I sent something to Australia and it was almost 10 bucks. That was the cheapest option too? I know it wasn't 2 pounds either. Maybe I'm missing something. - Leesha

Ericka, that's almost impossible! . Are you sure it was 2 pounds and not ounces? Within the us, first class is under 13 oz, and I've sent packages that were just a few ounces over within the same state that cost more than that for the cheapest option (usually parcel post). Media mail is pretty cheap, but can only be used for things like books and DVDs. Not sure they even offer that internationally. - bluefairy

I did ship through the regular post office. I never do fedex or ups. - Leesha

I don't think that's right either. I sent something just to Burbank from Rancho Cucamonga less than a pound and that was almost $2. Out of country is at least $8 depending on where. Canada and Mexico is cheaper because of special rates. - JediStitch

That's how much they charged me...it did take almost 3 weeks to get there but that's how much it was. At the P.O. They weighed it and told me that was for the cheapest option. I also had to fill out customs paperwork, and I declared 2 pounds. - ERICKA

That's surprising, since on the USPS website, for first class to Australia, 2 pounds is about $17. Priority flat rate is more than $13. Even on the slow boat, that would be uncommonly cheap, and I'm not sure they still offer that service. I've shipped all over the world, so I'm pretty familiar with the general practices and costs. Not saying that you're not telling the truth, just maybe there could be a mistake somewhere, and I wouldn't want people to expect to pay so little and be surprised at the p.o. I do think that people should at least weigh their items so they can calculate an approximate cost before they decide whether to make a rak us only. Pins and other small items are generally not costly to mail, just be mindful of the packaging. - bluefairy

On the other hand, I mail a lot of stuff to the US from Australia and recently found out that anything over a pound will now cost an extra $20 which goes to the US gov't to offset oil prices. Unimpressed. - BLG
