56 years ago today, One Hundred and One Dalmatians was released in theaters. *One Hundred and One Dalmatians was a box office success, pulling the studio out of the financial slump caused by Sleeping Beauty, a costlier production released two years prior. Aside from its box office revenue, its commercial success was due to the employment of inexpensive animation techniquesโ€”such as using xerograp  More...

"I'm hungry mother.  I really am."  I love this movie.  I saw it in the theater as a kid (must've been 1991).  There was a book, which I read first.  ๐Ÿ˜  In the book, Pongo's wife is named Missus, and she has 15 puppies and needs a nurse to help her feed them all.  Their humans find a lost liver-spotted Dalmatian--named Perdita--who is out looking for her own litter of puppies, who have been stolen.  Perdita helps nurse Missus's pups until they're stolen.  The Sword and the Stone and the Jungle Book also seem visually similar to me, so I would think they used Xerography animation, too?  I did not realize that Sleeping Beauty had been considered a financial problem!   - Spoonful_O_Sugar  706.9 #323 8:14AM
Ohmygoodness!! Your opening line made me laugh as that's what lilchurro and babychurro say every once in a while ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Wow! That book sounds very different than the movie. I wonder why? I also wonder when the book was published? Yes, those 2 movies are definitely Xerography! I hadn't realize it either about Sleeping Beauty, but if you have been to the Walt Disney family museum in SF, you can see the magnificent machine they designed and used to film it to give it such depth. No doubt it took a lot of human hours to make it, thus bringing up the cost. Thank you for answering my question๐Ÿ˜‰ - misschurro  9192.8 #12 8:29AM
We used to say that to our mom too ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚Yes, the book is a bit different: I suspect that it would have been a bit too complicated to handle Perdita's story and struggle, along with Pongo and Missus's, in a children's film, and knowing the financial issues, it sounds like they wanted to keep things somewhat simple.  What's cool is that it ends up that Perdita's litter is of course among the puppies rescued, and they are a little older, so they really step up to help get everyone out.  Then Perdita's husband is found and he becomes the 101st Dalmatian ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ I think the book was written in the 40s or 50s?  I still need to make it over to the museum one of these days!   - Spoonful_O_Sugar  706.9 #323 9:03AM
That's is my very favorite scene. Not only because of that rolly dog that's hungry, but because of the kanine krunchies commercial.  - phillip...rocks  1595.9 #127 9:28AM

Off the top of my head, I know the Jungle Book, the Black Cauldron and the Rescuers used xerography just by thinking about the style, I'm sure there's plenty more. I remember noticing as a kid how much it was used, but not being able to put my finger on it. Kinda "sketchy" ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜Š but in a good way! And also, Bill Peet provided many sketches for the film which made it look even sketchier ๐Ÿ˜‚. What a fun day! Pongo is my favorite Disney character.  - SassafrasDavis  860.5 #256 8:00AM
Thank you for answering!!! Robin Hood & Aristocats come to mind, too! It's definitely not my favorite style- especially coming off the heels of the absolutely beautifully animated Sleeping Beauty. I did not know Pongo is your fav! โ™ฅ๏ธ - misschurro  9192.8 #12 8:13AM

Back in the early 60s my mom went up to Disneyland for a white elephant sale they were having. She bought two original cells from the 101 Dalmatian movie.
