Good morning & Happy Sunday! This day in Disney history, Aug. 26th, 1918. A 16 year old Walt Disney enlists in the American Ambulance Corps (part of the Red Cross). The recruiter @ the Red Cross was skeptical since Walt needed to be 17 & asked to see Walt's birth certificate. Walt attempted to get it & was shocked to discover that Cook County had no record that he was born in Chicago on December 5th, 1901, as he'd been led to believe. Undeterred, he came up w/ a different plan. Walts mother Flora forges her husbands signature on the passport application & Walt changes the date of his birth to December 5, 1900. His application was accepted. He spent a year driving an ambulance & chauffeuring Red Cross officials. His ambulance was covered not just w/stock camouflage, but w/ Disney cartoons.

Changing your age was easier and common back then. My great grandmother did the same thing to be able to start working. - SammyJo  348.7 #429 8-26-12 11:08AM Like(1)  Reply

I researchmy genealogy, and it was so common to just change birthday. Names as well, no paperwork, court of law. Pretty amazing. - Sugarbuzz  55.4 #3698 8-26-12 11:34AM
Sugarbuzz...I do genealogy too. And the name changes really are confusing! If whoever doing intake couldn't spell, oh, well! They just wrote something down! My g-g-g grandpa came over from Ireland in the early 1800s when being Irish was not cool....he changed his Irish name (something like Manlon)) to an English name...Allsworth! His son changed his birthdate so he could join the Army. - Gia  794.2 #122 8-26-12 11:48AM
