I have a question, I do not mean to be rude here, but why does everyone who lives in So Cal think that "Nor Cal" is in San Francisco? That's more central. I'm sadly stuck up here in Nor Cal. Would like to go back to where my heart is. Hahaha
I also live in Norcal and San Francisco(it's an hour and a half east of me) is actually Norcal. There is no central, it's either north or south. I live exactly where the center of CA should be but no, we are Norcal. Don't know why exactly. - ❤MellieKay❤  130.4 #2582 9-8-11 8:06PM Like  Reply
Makes sense. I am near Shasta Lake. Way up there. Lol - EveandWalle  220.3 #1351 9-8-11 8:08PM Like  Reply
actually I have a lot of friends born and raised in the bay...they refer to that area themselves as NorCal...and yes I lived in NorCal for 5 years...Arcata...can't get too much further NorCal then that. - toph  2398.9 #26 9-8-11 8:10PM Like  Reply

My dad worked in Arcata for a year. Beautiful up there! My grandParent lived in Fort Bragg for years. The northern coast is beautiful! I'm in the central valley right by the bay area. - ❤MellieKay❤  130.4 #2582 9-8-11 8:12PM Like  Reply
MellieKay agreed! Such a beautiful part of California. I just missed the sun way too much. 8 + months of rain is no bueno. - toph  2398.9 #26 9-8-11 8:15PM Like  Reply
Arcata! We lived up there for 3 years at humboldt...love it up there! - MandJloveMickey  212.6 #1448 9-8-11 8:17PM Like  Reply
Yeah, my dad complained about the rain as well haha. Infact it stormed the whole weekend we visited. He moved back here in July and thought he was going to die from the heat haha. - ❤MellieKay❤  130.4 #2582 9-8-11 8:20PM Like  Reply
We lived in Medford, Oregon for 11 years before we finally made it back home to sunny SoCal! So happy to be home! - rogerrabbit76  25.5 #4622 9-8-11 8:23PM Like  Reply

I am from shasta lake But now live in central california its actually the central valley and the southern central valley. Its all wierd to me - Duckfan  12.8 #6080 9-8-11 8:32PM Like  Reply
SF is part of NorCal. There is a central and it's usually Fresno, Modesto, Visalia, Coalinga and all those other farm type places in the Central and San Joaquin Valleys etc. Generally anywhere that smells funny on the 5 or 99. By funny I mean au natural and no offense to the central valley - cesium55  529.7 #216 9-8-11 8:33PM Like  Reply
thanks cesium...just had a flashback of driving past Kettleman - toph  2398.9 #26 9-8-11 8:34PM Like  Reply
As a native Southern Californian, I refer to anything north of Santa Barbara as NorCal!!! LOL. I mean I know that technically there is a central CA, but it's all up north to me! - Mimmy  1405.6 #57 9-8-11 8:36PM Like  Reply
There is still a lot more north of SF, but SF is still more north than the middle part of Cali, thus it's NorCal - TickledTink  352.8 #406 9-8-11 8:37PM Like  Reply
I live in the central valley(San joaquin to be exact not all of it smells ) but we are "Norcal" even though we are the central valley. - ❤MellieKay❤  130.4 #2582 9-8-11 8:37PM Like  Reply
I grew up in the east bay and that is definitely NorCal. I think of central CA as the SLO area and east over to Modesto, etc. I call Carmel and up NorCal. - DaisyBell  668.4 #155 9-8-11 8:38PM Like  Reply
Why is there an r? It's SoCal so shouldn't it be NoCal - Vegaspooh  118.5 #2762 9-8-11 8:41PM Like  Reply
I grew up in the South Bay/Silicon Valley area and we always referred to it as norcal. :) - Darlingwendi  644.1 #168 9-8-11 8:43PM Like  Reply
Even though it's not the actual center, it seems like the Bakersfield side of the Grapevine is the divider for the state, right? And Lol at cesium! I live in the foothills and work in the valley--my home air is nice and clean, but my work air is smelly and polluted! - Spoonful_O_Sugar  436.2 #285 9-8-11 8:43PM Like  Reply
Carmel is lower than Modesto haha. - ❤MellieKay❤  130.4 #2582 9-8-11 8:44PM Like  Reply
Wait, are you kidding me? Not to be rude but San Francisco has always been NorCal. When you think of the Bay Area you think Northern California. I'm originally from the Bay Area and consider my self from NorCal. I mean really? I'm so offended! - SUUZinOC  715.3 #140 9-8-11 9:28PM Like  Reply
As someone who also lives in Fresno, I do not get how we could be considered NorCal since we are clearly in the middle of the state. I get how if you divided it in half, and blah blah blah, but come on! We are called the CENTRAL valley! As for me, I'm proud of our diary air! (insert sarcasm emoji) - CaliCanuck  511.7 #229 9-8-11 9:34PM Like  Reply
Anything over the grapevine is NorCal IMO...as soon as you get over the mountain you definitely feel like you are in southern California. No need to be offended by silly stuff like this. No need to even break the state up into central, eastern, etc. This is really not a big deal........ - michelledork  658.3 #159 9-8-11 9:35PM Like  Reply
But Carmel's on the coast so it's kinda special. But for some reason I consider it NorCal still. the smell is just that weird grassy, tangy smell. I'm not even talking about the cows. That's something else altogether but I went to school in Davis so that's normal ;) - cesium55  529.7 #216 9-8-11 9:37PM Like  Reply
you Aggie - toph  2398.9 #26 9-8-11 9:38PM Like  Reply
Ummm not to be rude but I live in socal and I dont think that and central is places like Fresno because we don't claim it as socal and my friends from there even call themselves central. - KissDclown  1088.1 #77 9-8-11 9:40PM Like  Reply
I drive past shasta to visit my hubs grandpa in weed. It is way to hot up there for me!! - Sasha513  286.6 #689 9-8-11 9:40PM Like  Reply
I heard there's some kind of rivalry between the two? A comedian did a piece on it and i'll see ppl on here mention some of the exact things she ridiculed and can't help but wonder if its true??? - amerado  9.5 #6924 9-8-11 9:41PM Like  Reply
As a socal person I just split California in half instead of thirds...no apparent reason Haha - Jessgiac  8.6 #7269 9-8-11 9:45PM Like  Reply
No rivalry, neither area, NorCal or SoCal cares what the other is doing, Truth, but, we are both Californians! - 2ndStar2theRight  24.5 #4691 9-8-11 9:45PM Like  Reply

Rogerrabbit76, I've lived in Medford since 1989. I grew up in the Bay Area aka Northern Ca. Now, when I hear that I think "Yreka"! - SlpgBty  14.3 #5783 9-8-11 9:58PM Like  Reply
I agree we're all just Californians, but the main difference I see between NorCal and SoCal is good beach weather and Disneyland. There's no denying that SoCal has something special going for it, housing the Happiest Place on Earth. Not that we don't have a lot of gems of our own in North Cali. I think most people who arent really familiar with NorCal can identify with SanFran as part of the North because it's one of the best-known cities. - poppet  19.7 #5082 9-8-11 10:03PM Like  Reply
Yes! All californians! And btw her name is julie goldman she's a bit extreme but I find it hilarious even though california is a different world to me altogether! Lol. Oh, and I think its called the pride comedy jam or something, not too sure. - amerado  9.5 #6924 9-8-11 10:06PM Like  Reply
I live in SF and consider North to be like Shasta, Eureka, and even Sac is pretty north. Central Ca to me would be like Stockton, Modesto and even Fresno. - JediTinker  26.1 #4576 9-8-11 10:08PM Like  Reply
Grew up in So Cal, but now live on the "eastside" of Seattle in the Northwest. I'm geographically confused! At least Nor Cal has In n Out Burger. *sigh* - mcarthy6  426.5 #298 9-8-11 10:11PM Like  Reply

I spent summers in the valley Modesto to be exact and the bay area - San Jose and palo alto. When I was a child I would consider it to be in the same area novak. We would drive down to SD to visit family and once we hit Valencia past the grapvine we were in Socal - staygoldponyboy  12.9 #6056 9-8-11 10:26PM Like  Reply
Isn't central Cal near Sac? I'm in the South Bay! Go Sharks - keli7516  180.3 #1857 9-9-11 12:33AM Like  Reply
It is part of Nor Cal lol google it, it says its part of Nor cal everywhere. - TinkgirlMel  164.5 #2093 9-9-11 12:43AM Like  Reply
So Cal has In N Out too... lol - TinkgirlMel  164.5 #2093 9-9-11 12:44AM Like  Reply
I grew up in the san francisco bay area and we always considered it part of nor cal. I now live in so cal (la). If you take the state as a whole and split into north and south, san francisco would end up in the northern half, so I think that's why. But I could be wrong. - partygurlone  143.8 #2385 9-9-11 12:59AM Like  Reply
i think it's this... the coastal part of CA has norcal and socal. then when you get more inland there becomes a central CA. but the bay area does count as norcal. - GlassSlippers  363.6 #383 9-9-11 1:26AM Like  Reply
Cause san francisco is the only city north of southern California worth mentioning. Not by much though. - HotDiggityDogDaddy  1112.2 #74 9-9-11 1:47AM Like  Reply
I can't believe this is so controversial. As a person who has lived in "Nor Cal" and in "Central Cali" I can defiantly tell you there is a difference. San Fran IS nor cal the coast is a part of this nor cal vs do cal thing. central cali is from about turlock till bakersfield. When your on 99 outside of fresno there are 2 trees one pine tree and one palm tree representing Nor Cal and So Cal. It's kinda cool. - nappingbeauty  269.4 #830 9-9-11 2:06AM Like  Reply
SF IS part of NorCal! I lived in CA (Sacramento Area) my entire life (40yrs) and you hardly ever hear people say they live in Central Cali, it is either NorCal or SoCal. - ZBrerFox  171.5 #1978 9-9-11 4:54AM Like  Reply
@tiggertailgrl I lived in Mendocino for 18 years and now live in Sacramento. - krash2501  126.9 #2616 9-9-11 5:09AM Like  Reply
I did not mean to be rude or offend anyone. I was just saying that someone who moved from Palmdale up to northern Ca I just considered it like looking at a map of California that I just saw SF as being more then the middle of Ca. I guess if I never moved I would say yea SF is in the northern part of CA but being up here I see SF as more in the middle. I'm sorry. - EveandWalle  220.3 #1351 9-9-11 8:51AM Like  Reply
I live in the Central Valley...and it sucks. Anything above Fresno/Clovis is NorCal anything below is SoCal. You can't get more dead center than Fresno. Used to live in Livermore/Pleasanton. I consider that NorCal even though it's East Bay. - DisneyBride°O°  366.5 #380 9-9-11 8:55AM Like  Reply
I lived in the central valley most of my life I always hated explaining to noncalifornians that the "central valley" isn't the same as the SoCal "valley" we come from a smellier place  - HisLilo  198.8 #1650 9-9-11 10:16AM Like  Reply
